Kybella®™ could be a great non-surgical solution for you if you have a double chin – also referred to as “submental fullness.” Kybella® was recently approved by the FDA in 2015 after 20+ clinical studies have shown that it is safe and effective. Kybella®’s results are permanent, and it requires no downtime.

Kybella® is made up of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, it causes the destruction of the fat cells so that those cells cannot accumulate fat again. This injectable treatment is a great way for both men and women to tighten the chin and jawline for a more youthful appearance without the need for surgery.

The results of Kybella® are gradual as the tightening effect takes place over a period of about six weeks, after which you may need subsequent treatments. Most patients have two or three treatments at six-week intervals.

At Dermatology Medical Group of San Francisco, all consultations and treatments are done by our physicians. They have researched Kybella® extensively and have been well-trained on how to successfully administer the injection for the most optimal results.

We are very particular about the treatments we offer, studying each to determine if a particular product or technique is worthy of our patients. It is important that we can stand by every treatment and recommend it with confidence for our patients. Then, we make sure that we receive the training required to provide excellent results. This includes follow-up training, as needed.

A thorough examination and detailed medical history will determine if you are a good candidate for the Kybella® procedure. Certain medicines should not be combined with Kybella®, so it is extremely important that we obtain your medication history at the time of your examination.

If you have sagging jowls, Ultherapy® might be a better option for you than Kybella®. We will inform you of various treatment options during your consultation and will make recommendations so that you can feel confident about your decision.

The Kybella® Treatment

Kybella® is administered using a fine needle, so it is not painful. We apply ice to the treatment area, and the injections themselves take less than a half hour.

Six weeks later, you will see the results of your first treatment. If the area is not tight enough at that time, you can have another treatment. Again, in six weeks, you will decide if you need a third treatment to achieve the final result you want.

Recovering from Kybella® Injections

While most patients experience some slight bruising and swelling during the first week, there are no restrictions on your activities after Kybella®. You can return to work or elsewhere immediately after your appointment, and you can use makeup, a scarf, or a turtleneck to cover any discoloration.

You might also feel tender at the injection sites for a week or two. If the pain is bothersome, over-the-counter medication should provide sufficient relief.

While the results of Kybella® are permanent, weight gain or the effects of aging over time can cause a recurrence of a double chin. If this happens, you can have subsequent Kybella® treatments in the future.
